Why Your Garden Needs Bird Attracting Plants

Why Your Garden Needs Bird Attracting Plants

There’s nothing quite like catching the glimpse of a blue jay’s bright feathers when you least expect. In fact, bird watching is one of the most relaxing activities you can do, which makes it the perfect stress reliever. It’s a great hobby for people of all ages to enjoy. For young children, it teaches them about nature, and for the elderly, it keeps their minds sharp and active.

While you might normally have to venture out into the natural habitats of certain bird species, you can just as easily watch those same birds from your own backyard, by planting certain types of flowers, shrubs, and trees in your garden. The late summer and early fall is the best time to attract birds, as most plants produce their seeds and fruits at this time of year.

Consider planting:

  • Elderberry
  • Sunflowers
  • Viburnum
  • Cardinal flower
  • Aster
  • Dogwood

These flowers, shrubs, and trees will provide plenty of food for local birds such as humming birds, finches, blue birds, warblers, chickadees, etc. as they prepare for winter. This will also make for a wonderful view of all kinds of birds that you might not have commonly seen before. As a bonus, the vibrant colors will brighten up your backyard and turn your garden into its own ecosystem.

Plant ahead for the winter season; specific plants continue to produce berries and other food sources during this time for birds that don’t migrate, or are passing through during their migrating patterns and might not have anything else to eat.

  • Holly
  • Hawthorn
  • Chokeberry
  • Crabapple
  • Sumac
  • Firethorn

During the spring to mid-summer, when many birds are out searching for food to feed their young, plant:

  • Honeysuckle
  • Blueberry
  • Strawberry
  • Birch
  • Red Buckeye

Obviously the more yard space or land you have, the more of these plants you can integrate into your garden, but many of these plants, particularly the flowers and bushes, don’t take up much space and will create a warm and welcoming home to birds, butterflies and people.
