The best defense against crabgrass is a healthy lawn, as unwanted grasses and weeds can’t get the necessary toehold to thrive in a robust lawn.
Basic Lawn Care
Mow frequently and keep the grass at a consistent length. Check the recommended mowing heights for your type of grass. Crabgrass requires plenty of light to germinate. If you cut your lawn too short, you will get patches where crabgrass and other weeds can germinate. So, cut your lawn at the highest recommended setting and keep grass as thick and long as possible to create shade near the soil surface.
If your lawn is newly-seeded, water in shallow, more frequent intervals until the grass gets established. For an established lawn, water in long, heavy intervals. Established lawns require about one inch of water per week from rain or irrigation. Fertilize your grass at least once a year.
What to do if crabgrass has become established in your lawn
Unfortunately, if this happens, then regular lawn maintenance may not be enough, therefore we would recommend using herbicides. Pre-emergent herbicides work by killing off the crabgrass seedlings as they begin to germinate. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when you apply pre-emergent herbicides.
Don’t de-thatch or aerate the lawn after applying pre-emergent herbicides, as doing so may break the chemical barrier from the herbicide. Apply the herbicide uniformly across your lawn; if you miss a spot, crabgrass will get established and spread across the lawn. You should also wait 2-4 months to re-seed the lawn after using herbicides.
When using lawn care products and treatments, always follow the manufacturer’s directions regarding proper clothing, protective equipment, application procedures and safety precautions. When using herbicides, make sure you understand which weeds the chemical treats and which, if any, desirable plants it may also kill.
